…Just thought you should know. I wish I could help more.

The last line of the email had my anger flaring. My entire opportunity in London was gone. Well from what I read, it was probably never there to begin with. I was blacklisted in London.

I looked around my apartment, filled with boxes of my stuff ready to be shipped and now I had nowhere to ship it. Tears began to fill my eyes and I swiped them away before they could fall down over my cheeks. I’d done my best to avoid Conor. Somehow, I knew he could help me. I knew he could get me a job in London if I really wanted it but would he do it?

No. Conor wouldn’t help me. He wanted me to stay. The interaction at the club with his brother told me that.

But there was someone who wanted me gone.

Killian.

I grabbed my keys and headed down to my car. As I drove to the nightclub, I didn’t expect it to be open. After all, it was a nightclub but I had to try something to get this frustration out. I opened the doors and surprisingly they shifted and opened. I took one step in, knowing this was stupid. Killian tried to kill me last time before Conor had saved me.

“We’re closed,” I heard his booming voice from somewhere in the darkened room. The skylight gave a little light in the room but all the booths were cloaked in darkness. The light of a laptop screen highlighted someone sitting in one of the booths. My fear rocketed up my spine and I felt bile rise in my throat.

This was a mistake.

“Why are you here?” he asked me, pushing out of the booth and turning on dim lights around the center of the club. It was so much bigger with everyone out of it. Killian’s face was full of bruises and little cuts from Conor’s beating. It looked incredibly painful.

“I’m sorry to come here unannounced.”

“Why are you here?” he repeated, more menacing this time.

“I need your help.”

“My help?” he repeated after me. “Why would you think I would ever help you?”

“Because you want your brother back to the way he was, and I need to leave but I don’t think he’s letting me.”

Killian’s intensity lowered a little. It was almost like he knew I wasn’t putting him on.

“What do you need?”

“I have been blacklisted in London, I can’t get a job. I need you to get him to lift it.”

Killian frowned. “We don’t have any jurisdiction in London, Teeghan. He wouldn’t know the first thing to do with blacklisting.”

I felt my justified anger slip away. “Really?”

“Yeah,” he said. “It wasn’t him but if you really want to get free of Ireland, I can help you. We may not have contacts in London but we do in Scotland and Wales. I can help you find a place in either of those countries.”

My fierce resolve was disappearing quickly as I stood in front of the monster I knew Killian to be.
